Phishing Attempts via Impersonation

Recent trends of phishing attempts at App State include impersonation of faculty and sending emails to student’s personal email accounts from a non @appstate.edu email address.

These emails ask the student to participate in a task that will pay them. These particular emails are used to build trust with students outside of the organization and then they will ask for items, such as banking information.

Unfortunately, emails sent from threat actors to personal emails are not within our jurisdiction. When we are forwarded these emails, we reach out to the user and recommend that the user cut off contact with the malicious email address, they can also mark the email as phishing (in Gmail) and block emails from the sender.
