What is the Cyber Bowl?

The Cyber Bowl is a month-long cybersecurity quiz competition among North Carolina universities, held to mark National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October.  ITS is joining fellow NC Institutions this year in this annual, free event open to all faculty, staff and students.

Timeframe: Oct 1-31, coinciding with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (Oct.) and Annual Cybersecurity Awareness training (for Fac/Staff Oct 1- Dec. 31)

Who's competing: 10+ NC universities this year, including newcomers Appalachian State and Western Carolina University, joining NC State, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC A&T, East Carolina, Winston-Salem State, UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State.

Past winners: UNC-Chapel Hill won the inaugural 2024 title; Elizabeth City State won in 2025.

How to play: Log in with school credentials, take a short quiz on passwords, phishing, malware and online privacy.

Scoring: Completing the quiz earns a point for your school regardless of score; the school with the highest percentage of participants wins.

Incentive: We will be raffling off some cool items to participants, including football game tickets and vendor swag, including a Yeti cooler and lawn chairs (more in the works)!
